Djamchid Assadi was interviewed by the French press on democracy in Islam and the Iranian nuclear crisis

 

Over the summer, Djamchid Assadi took part in two interviews with two French journals. The first interview entitled "La démocratie est-elle possible dans les terres d’Islam?" was published in the quarterly EurOrient. The second interview, concerning the Iranian nuclear crisis, was published in Le Monde on August 11. 

 

 
 

Petermichael von Bawey was co-organizer of the 29th IMISE Conference held at AUP and was invited to participate in "La marche de la mémoire" in St. Martin Vésubie

 

Petermichael von Bawey was co-organizer of the 29th IMISE Conference held at The American University of Paris from July 4-9. In response to the Conference's theme "Challenges of Estrangement in a United Europe Confronting the World," over fifty scholars from more than a dozen countries presented their papers. Professor von Bawey chaired the panel "History and Law" and lectured on "The Berlin Wall and the Politics of Memory." 

 

Professor von Bawey was invited to participate in "La marche de la mémoire" in St. Martin Vésubie, 10-11 September, a ceremony honoring Jewish survivors, local residents and Italian alpinists who had hidden more than a thousand Jews in this small alpine village during World War Two.

 

 
 

Richard Beardsworth presented a paper at the British Association of International Studies Post-structural Working Group

 

Richard Beardsworth presented a paper on “Concrete Rationality and World Polity” at the British Association of International Studies Post-structural Working Group, “Blair- Bush: Resisting the ‘Axis of Evil’”, May 12–15 at the Department of International Politics, University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

 

His article “The Future of Critical Philosophy and World Politics,” together with a roundtable discussion on the legacy of the French philosopher Jacques Derrida and his own response to it, are to be published in Millennium: Journal of International Studies, Volume 34:1.

 

His article "Modernity and Excess in Recent French Thought" will be published by Telos: Quarterly Journal of Critical Thought in the next nine months, and his article "A Note on Political Love in our Global Age" has been provisionally accepted by Contretemps: An Online Journal of Philosophy.

Cheryl Caesar presented a paper, "The Joys of Otherness: Heteroglossia in Anne Tyler's St. Maybe" at the international congress of SIETAR (Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research) U.K. at Middlesex University in London, July 9. The paper will be published in the proceedings of the congress.

 

 
 

Jerome Charyn has recently published articles in Les Cahiers du Cinéma, The New York Times, L'Equipe, and Air France Magazine

 

Jerome Charyn’s ten-page entry on Film Noir and New York will appear in the next edition of Les Cahiers du Cinéma’s international encyclopedia of film. His article on urban architect Michael Avramides appeared in the City section of the New York Times on July 17. His article, “Remains of the Day,” on 9/11 memorials, is scheduled to appear in the City section of the New York Times on September 11. His story, “An Oral History of an Unremembered Man” (about New York Giant baseball player Hank Thompson, who became a bandit) was published in the July 30 supplement of L’Equipe. His photo-essay on Greenwich Village (“Les secrets de mon Village”), was the lead article in the 100th anniversary issue of Air France Magazine (August 2005).

 

His essay on New York that accompanies a sketchbook by Fabrice Moireau will be published in September by St. Martin’s Press (USA), Thames and Hudson (England), Les Editions du Pacific (France), and Les Editions Didier Millet (Singapore). On September 10, he and the artist will sign books at the Bon Marché as part of a celebration on New York.

 

In October Random House will publish Savage Shorthand, Charyn’s study of Isaac Babel. On November 10 he is scheduled to discuss the book with Isaac Babel’s daughter, Nathalie Babel, at New York University.

 

In November Thunder’s Press will publish his anthology of Jewish-American Literature, Inside the Hornet’s Head, and will reprint his novel, The Green Lantern, which was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award in fiction.

Susan Cure attended the American Society of Gene Therapy conference in St. Louis, Missouri, from June 1-5. The conference focused on the latest research in the field and on the subject of stem cells.

 

 
 

Steven Ekovich participated in conferences on transatlantic issues, the use of force, American identity and U.S. foreign policy, and the history and sociology of American international relations theory

 

On May 31, Steven Ekovich commented on the nomination of Dominique de Villepin as French Prime Minister for the National Public Radio show “All Things Considered.”

 

In June his article “Les impacts des relations diplomatiques franco-américaines sur le développement de la démocratie au Moyen-orient: le cas de Liban” was published in EurOrient (No. 19, 2005).

 

He participated in a conference on transatlantic issues at the French National Assembly organized by the American Center of Sciences Po and Columbia University on “Géopolitique et Développement: Convergences Transatlantiques?” and shared a panel with the Chairman of the French Joint Chiefs of Staff and French strategists and researchers.

 

Ekovich also participated in a conference on “Usage de la Violence” held at the Université Paris I – Sorbonne.

 

On June 21 he gave a presentation on American identity and U.S. foreign policy at a conference of the Forum de Futur, held at the French National Assembly with speakers that included former and present government officials.

 

He also gave a presentation at the University of Beijing on the history and sociology of American international relations theory, and was cited in an Associated Press article on July 5 on the political profile of leading French politician Nicolas Sarkozy.

Gardner's book, American Global Strategy and the 'War on Terorism' was just published by Ashgate, with reviews by Amitai Etzioni, Simon Serfaty and Marcel van Herpen. Professor Hall Gardner will discuss his new book on Wednesday, October 5 at 18:30.

 

A full thirteen page interview of Hall Gardner's views of transformation of NATO and of the transatlantic relationship was published in May 2005 by the International Affairs Forum

 

Gardner spoke on the "Future of the Transatlantic Relationship" at the French National Assembly at the Colloque "Valeurs européennes, valeurs atlantiques" organized by the Forum du Futur on June 21.

 

On July 12, Gardner presented his paper, "Geopolitical Equilibrium, Global Civil Society and International Law" at the International Sociological Association (ISA) Research Committee on Sociology of Law conference on "Law and Justice Beyond Borders," which was organized jointly with the European Network of Law & Society and the sociology of law section of the French Sociological Association. His participation was sponsored by the AUP Trustee Fund for the Advancement of Scholarship.

 

Gardner's article, "From the Egyptian Crisis of 1882 to Iraq of 2003" (and that on hegemony), along with other articles by David Calleo, Albert Fishlow, and Patrick O'Brien that were presented at the Second Annual President's Conference for the Advancement of Scholarship (May 2004), and then published in Sens Public No. 3 (From the Egyptian Crisis of 1882 to Iraq of 2003 World Hegemony and its Aftermath) have been listed in Political Theory Daily Review.

 

 
 

Jeff Gima, David Horn, and Celeste Schenck attended the second annual meeting of the American International Consortium of Academic Libraries

 

Jeff Gima, David Horn, and Celeste Schenck attended and helped organize the second annual meeting of AMICAL, the American International Consortium of Academic Libraries, June 1-3 in Beirut, Lebanon. Nearly 50 librarians, information technology specialists and academic officers from the 17 member universities were in attendance. The meeting was hosted by the Lebanese American University, but AUP faculty also played a pivotal role in the meeting’s success. Celeste Schenck provided organizational leadership and secured funding through the Mellon Foundation for participants’ attendance. Jeff Gima helped organize AMICAL’s working groups and has been spearheading several AMICAL projects, including consortial access to the tens of millions of books and journals in OCLC’s 9000-library-strong interlibrary loan network. David Horn has been testing prototypes for a portal to replace AMICAL’s temporary website (www.ac.aup.fr/amical). Schenck and Gima are also on the consortium’s steering committee. AMICAL’s mission is to foster collaboration in the use of information and technology resources to support the curricular goals of its member-institutions, universities providing an American-style education in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Russia.

Gary Linn, former Dean of the School of Business at Henderson State University, joins AUP as Chair of the International Business Administration Department

 
Ali Fatemi announced the arrival of Gary Linn, former Dean of the School of Business at Henderson State University, to AUP. In addition to serving as Professor of Finance/ Accounting and Chair of the International Business Administration Department, Linn’s long-standing association with the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) will be of great value as AUP seeks AACSB accreditation for our graduate and undergraduate business curriculum.

At the end of June, Linda Martz gave a paper entitled "Autobiography, Gender and Spirituality: the case of Aimee Semple McPherson" at the Women, Faith and Spirituality conference of the University of Glamorgan and the West of England and South Wales Women's History Network. The paper examined the extent to which the evangelist's autobiographical writings took into account the gendered nature of attacks against her and asked whether they indicated a feminized theology.

 

 
 

Ann Mott gave a paper at the annual European Writing Centers Association Conference

 

Ann Mott gave a paper entitled “Freshmen in the Balance: Writing to Learn” at the annual European Writing Centers Association Conference in Halkidiki, Greece.

 

Ann has also been asked to continue serving on the Board of the European Writing Centers Association.

Anne-Marie Picard-Drillien has recently published two articles on two French women writers, Marguerite Duras and Christine Angot: "M.D., cette maladie contagieuse..." in Les Lectures de Marguerite Duras, PUL, France; "L'intime livre au danger: la solution onirique de Christine Angot," in L'Intimité, Presses Universitaires Blaise Pascal (Centre de Recherches sur les Littératures modernes et contemporaines). Another article, "'L'enclave de l'écriture': jouissance, symptôme et création" has been accepted for publication by Presses Universitaires de Dijon.

 

She will also give a paper at the 9th International Congress of the European Scientific Association for Residential and Foster Care for Children & Adolescents (EUSARF): "Troubled Children in a Troubled World" held on September 21-24 at Paris X University. Her paper is entitled: "Psychopathologie des troubles de l'apprentissage de la lecture".

 

 
 

David Pike has received the second travel-and-research grant in his program funded by the Charles Delmar Foundation

 
Professor Emeritus David Pike has received the second travel-and-research grant in his five-year program funded by the Charles Delmar Foundation. In preparing his new book (Called to Account: The Killers of Mauthausen on Trial), he will be working in Amsterdam, Cologne and Memmingen on the trial proceedings held in those cities.

The current issue of New Media and Society is guest-edited by Adrienne Russell. It is a special theme issue on digital resistance. The issue is based on papers presented at an A.W. Mellon Foundation-funded conference, “The Other Internet: Exploring Digital Resistance,” held at AUP in 2004, and includes an article and an editorial by Adrienne Russell.

 

 
 

Adrienne Russell has joined the research team of the Annenberg Center for Communication

 

Adrienne Russell is on leave for the year and has joined the research faculty at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg Center for Communication in Los Angeles. As one of the Center’s Networked Publics Fellows, she is working with a group of international interdisciplinary scholars to investigate the social, economic and political impact of network technologies. Before moving to Los Angeles, Adrienne taught a course on global media at the University of California-Berkeley.

David Tresilian published two articles in Al-Ahram Weekly

 

David Tresilian wrote a review of “Figures du Palestinien, identité des origines, identité de devenir” by Elias Sanbar for Al-Ahram (Cairo), which appeared in Al-Ahram Weekly on June 16.  He wrote a profile of the Franco-Algerian writer Assia Djebar, elected to the Académie Française in June, for the same newspaper on July 7.

 

On July 5 he read a paper entitled “Being Estranged from England: the Case of D.H. Lawrence” at the 29th IMISE Conference held at AUP.

 

 
 

George Wanklyn is working on a catalog produced as part of a series of exhibitions organized by the Louvre Museum and Atlanta's High Museum of Art

 

George Wanklyn is a member of a three-person team working on a catalog for a loan exhibition entitled “The Kings as Collectors: The Kings’ Drawings.” The catalog is being produced as part of a series of exhibitions organized by the Louvre and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, collectively called “Louvre in America.” Starting in mid-October 2006, and running to mid-January 2007, 58 drawings from the Département des arts graphiques of the Louvre will be exhibited in Atlanta. From October 2007 to January 2008, 45 other drawings will be shown at the Denver Museum of Art. One catalog is being prepared for the two exhibitions, under the supervision of Catherine Loisel, Conservateur en chef du Département des arts graphiques. The exhibitions each consist of four sections, presenting drawings acquired in various ways by three Kings of France, from 1671 to 1775. Professor Wanklyn is participating in the formulation of the catalog entries, and is serving as editor for the submission of most of the entries in English.
